Designing with Thread

Twice a week Hobart College students are invited to attend Stitch and Sew during lunch break. At this time they are encourage to have fun exploring and learning new skills using textiles. Students who attended throughout 2017 revamped clothing, learnt how to crochet, made jewellery from wool and cotton yarn, learnt how to patchwork, sketched and designed projects using fabrics and threads.

This was a student’s very first attempt on a sewing machine trying out a variety of stitches. The design qualities were so impressive we decided to turn his experimentation into a pencil case.

Object Design (Textiles) Exhibition, Hobart 2017

This video showcases the work of students who studied Object Design in 2017, Hobart and primarily used textiles as their medium to work with.
Object Design is a University Connections Program unit designed for college students in Tasmania who have successfully completed, or are demonstrating excellent progress in Design and Production (or an equivalent subject).
The program is project-based. Students attend a one-day symposium that includes designer talks, technical demonstrations and an introduction to their project brief. Students then work with teachers in their ‘home’ colleges on completing a design in response to the project brief.
