Calico Creatives Design Brief Projects 2018

Students enrolled in Design and Production Textiles at Hobart College were given a
Calico Creative design brief challenge.

They were each given a piece of cream calico which they has to decorate using a surface techniques of their choice. The first few weeks were spent researching a variety of techniques which included fabric dyeing, hand embroidery, applique, patchwork, and fabric painting. Students then chose one, or a combination of these techniques, for their fabric which they then made into a pencil case, cushion or tote bag.

Here’s what they came up with!

Revamped Fashion Workshop, Hobart 2017

The clothing designs shown in this video were part of a display by Angela White who is an award winning costume designer. Angela works regularly on reality television shows and designs for Australia’s brightest pop stars. Throughout her career, Angela has learnt how to be resourceful and turn around show stopping pieces in a matter of hours!

Angela showed examples of some of her most popular work, which we were welcome to photograph, during a workshop held in Hobart, Tasmania in 2017. Angela has a talent for how to revamp old clothing into new pieces.

Object Design (Textiles) Exhibition, Hobart 2017

This video showcases the work of students who studied Object Design in 2017, Hobart and primarily used textiles as their medium to work with.
Object Design is a University Connections Program unit designed for college students in Tasmania who have successfully completed, or are demonstrating excellent progress in Design and Production (or an equivalent subject).
The program is project-based. Students attend a one-day symposium that includes designer talks, technical demonstrations and an introduction to their project brief. Students then work with teachers in their ‘home’ colleges on completing a design in response to the project brief.
